Her family immigrated to United State in 1979 & it was also her birth year. Jojo Chokalingam is her only brother who works on education sector. Kaling’s mother died in 2012 because of pancreatic cancer. Kaling told that no one calls her as “Vera”. Her mother used to watch a TV show “Mork& Mindy” in Nigeria at the time of her pregnancy. Kaling’s mother picked her middle name from this TV show.

Kailng completed her graduation from a private school in Cambridge in 1997. In the following year, she entered Dartmouth College where she became a member of the improvisational comedy troupe “The Dog Days players” & a Capella group “The Rockapellas”.
